Supportive Apprenticeships Create Opportunities for All

Apprenticeships offer fantastic opportunities for people at all stages of their careers, from school leavers and career changers to those looking to upskill. They provide structured training, nationally recognised qualifications, and the chance to earn while learning.  

For employers, apprenticeships are an effective way to develop talent, improve skills across their workforce, and invest in the long-term success of their business. 

These opportunities span a wide range of industries, from health and social care to engineering, manufacturing, hospitality, and the creative industries. And with apprenticeships available from Level 2 through to degree level, there is something to suit different educational backgrounds, skill levels, and career ambitions. 

However, despite the many benefits, some potential apprentices and employers still worry about barriers to getting started. Whether it’s concerns about support for apprentices, transport difficulties in rural areas, or financial challenges, help is available to overcome these issues. 

One of the key areas of focus has been ensuring the right support is in place for apprentices who may need extra help. Independent training providers, colleges, and employers work closely together to offer mentoring and guidance, particularly in areas such as mental health and wellbeing. The need for this support has grown, and there are now well-established signposting systems in place to help apprentices access specialist services if required. Whether it’s additional help with housing, benefits, or mental health support, there are networks to ensure apprentices can stay on track and complete their training. 

For some, transport can be a challenge, particularly in rural and more deprived areas of Wales where travel to a workplace may not always be straightforward. This is an area we continue to focus on, working with Welsh Government to explore practical solutions, including ideas such as subsidised travel for apprentices in certain areas. The National Training Federation for Wales has been working closely with government on how best to support apprenticeships, ensuring that the opportunities available are accessible to all. 

We recognise that Welsh Government has made significant investments in apprenticeships, and while the draft Budget remains cash flat, we ask for consideration around the budget. It is crucial to allocate additional funds to continue delivering essential programmes, particularly in health and social care, as well as in other key industries to foster economic growth and to address the ongoing health crisis. 

While some challenges remain, the message is clear – apprenticeships are open to everyone, and support is in place to help individuals and businesses make the most of them. Employers who engage with apprenticeships not only develop the next generation of skilled workers but also see real benefits for their own business, with improved skills, greater productivity, and stronger staff retention. 

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we are encouraging more employers to explore what apprenticeships can do for them. It’s a chance to see the impact apprenticeships are already having on businesses and individuals across Wales and to understand how easy it can be to get started. For any business considering taking on an apprentice, now is the time to have that conversation.
