Hydro Wrexham has become first Gold Award Associate supporter from North Wales for the The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE).
The £10,000 sponsorship will enable the DofE charity in Wales to further develop its work with more marginalised young people in North Wales and Wrexham.
Barry Salisbury, Managing Director of Hydro Wrexham, said:
“Business cannot succeed in societies that fail. Everyone at Hydro Wrexham is incredibly proud to be the first Gold Level Sponsor of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in North Wales. At Hydro, we believe in the power of investing in our young people, building skills for the future and supporting initiatives that develop stronger, more resilient communities. The DofE programme aligns perfectly with our values. Together we will work to make a positive difference for young people in Wrexham and North Wales, preparing them for the world, work and life.”
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a globally recognised programme that encourages young people to develop essential life skills, resilience, and a sense of adventure. By supporting the DofE, Hydro Wrexham aims to provide more opportunities for young people in North Wales to engage, helping them to unlock their potential and achieve their personal and professional goals.
Ian Gwilym, Senior Relationships Manager at DofE Wales, said:
“This really is fantastic news to announce our first ever Gold level supporter in North Wales. The DofE is more relevant to young people today than ever before, and Hydro’s support will enable us to extend the reach of the programme to more young people who may be facing financial barriers or marginalisation.”
Hydro Wrexham said its commitment to supporting the DofE aligns with its broader mission to foster sustainable and inclusive growth within the community.
The donation of £10,000 from Hydro Wrexham will support the following
- Participation places for marginalised young people to take part in the DofE programme.
- Schools with additional expedition kit, enabling more young people to take part in the programme.
- Training of more volunteer leaders to expand support for young participants.
- Front-line operational costs in North Wales.
Some employees at Hydro Wrexham have been involved in DofE in the past.
Barry said:
“Hydro Wrexham is a small plant and we have a strong “family feeling” where many of our employees have been with us for more than 10, 15 and even 30 years. Our employees feel it is important to contribute to the community in which we operate and engage in local initiatives. We have a few examples where our employees have taken part in DofE, and they all have positive things to say about that experience. We are all delighted that Hydro Wrexham is now doing even more to support this important programme.”
